Dean Freytag's Steel Mill
Probabably the best known steel mill modeler in the US is Dean Freytag. Dean was building steel mill models before most of us knew anything about steel mills! Dean continues today, building, building, building. This is a shot of his strand caster. It has all the elements and could be used as an instructional model!
Here is the same strand caster building with the roof in place.
Dean's layout has a long peninsula down the center of the room that is all the hot end of the steel mill. The density of the structures and the overall feel of tightness is an excellent depiction of how steel mills were built in Western PA. There was never enough real estate to spread out, so everything was very tight.
This is a shot of Dean's layout you rarely see. This is the back side of the strand caster building which goes to the end of the peninsula. What better place to put the power packs and controls!
