VALENE Steel Mill
My name is José Balan Filho
I am 59 and was born in Mandaguaçu, Paraná, Brasil. I am married with 3 daughters, have a real estate property management business and have been a model railroader for 25 years.
Siderúrgica VALENE (VALENE Steel Mill)
My inspiration for doing the layout came from an article by John Glaab in Kalmbach's Model Railroad Planning 2008. In that article John Glaab presents a magnificent steel mill project, the Magarac Steel & Iron.
Taking John's text as a starting point, I tried to get information about how a steel mill really works. I found all I needed in the book "The Model Railroder's Guide to Stell Mills", by Bernard Kempinski.
Following John's guidance, I bought the main kits from Walthers. But I need to underline that I myself did many things for the scenery, using Brazilian products adapted to the project needs.
The layout was based on John's project, and the changes in his project were a result of adding new items to the architectural complex.
The name VALENE
The name VALENE is a merging of the names of two large Brazilian companies: Vale do Rio Doce (the world's second-largest mining company and largest producer of iron ore) and Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional — CSN (the largest steel mill in Latin America and one of the largest in the world).
